If you’re planning a visit to Mackinaw City or ordering Murdick’s Famous Fudge online, you probably have a few questions. Since 1887, the Murdick family has handcrafted Murdick’s Famous Fudge using fresh cream, real butter, premium Belgian chocolate, and traditional marble slab techniques. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.
Does Murdick’s Famous Fudge Need to Be Refrigerated?
No. Murdick’s Famous Fudge is best enjoyed at room temperature. Refrigeration may dry out the fudge and change its smooth, creamy texture. However, if you receive fudge that is warm from sitting in your mailbox or any other reason, please feel free to put it into the refrigerator to firm up a bit. Then you can take it out and keep it at room temperature in your home…as long as you leave it wrapped or in a storage container that is airtight. To keep your fudge at its freshest, handle it as little as possible and always with clean hands. During production, we wear food-safe gloves and never touch the finished fudge with bare hands before we wrap and package it.
Wrap your fudge well and store it in a cool, dry place. It will stay fresh for several weeks.
How Long Does Murdick’s Famous Fudge Stay Fresh?
When properly wrapped and stored in a cool, dry place, our fudge can remain fresh for several weeks. For the best flavor and texture, enjoy it as soon as possible after receiving it. Many people say it doesn’t last long enough to dry out!
Can I Freeze Murdick’s Famous Fudge?
Yes. Fudge can be frozen for longer storage. Keep it tightly wrapped and place it in a freezer-safe container or bag.
When you are ready to enjoy it, allow the fudge to thaw while it is still wrapped. This helps protect its creamy texture and prevents moisture from forming directly on the fudge. Many customers tell us they have found fudge in their freezer six months later, thawed it, and enjoyed it as if they had just bought it.
Is Murdick’s Famous Fudge Made Fresh Daily?
Yes. We make fresh batches of fudge in our Mackinaw City candy kitchen using traditional candy-making methods and marble slabs every single day. Of course, we are a seasonal business and are open to the public from May through October. We also make fudge during the Christmas season to fill holiday orders, although our retail store is closed. However, if you happen to be in the area, we’ve been known to open the door and let visitors come in to buy a little fresh fudge to take home.
Visitors can watch members of the Murdick family make fresh fudge by hand throughout the day.
Do you ever get the fudge on the floor?
HAHAHA…yes, it happens once in a while! We make fudge by hand, and occasionally a batch decides it has a mind of its own!
Why do you use marble slabs to make fudge?
Marble quickly draws heat away from the hot fudge, allowing it to cool slowly and evenly.
We use several marble slabs and rotate each batch through the process. While one batch is being poured, another is being worked on the marble, and another is being sliced and wrapped. This continuous rotation allows us to keep making fresh fudge throughout the day.
What Ingredients Are Used in Murdick’s Famous Fudge?
We make our fudge with fresh cream, real butter, sugar, and premium Belgian chocolate and pure Madagascar vanilla. Different flavors may include additional ingredients such as nuts, our own homemade caramel, cherries, peanut butter, coconut, marshmallows, Teddy Grahams, dried cherries, chocolate chunks, real maple sugar, and other flavorings.
How Many Fudge Flavors Do You Offer?
We offer a wide variety of classic and specialty flavors. During the summer, we typically offer 20–25 flavors at any given time. In Spring and Fall we have seasonal flavors like Pumpkin and Caramel Apple. Popular choices may include Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Vanilla, Maple Walnut, Sea Salt Caramel, Turtle, Traverse City Cherry, Cookies and Cream, and seasonal favorites. Our single most popular flavor is Plain Chocolate. We sell nearly three times more Plain Chocolate than any other flavor.
Flavor availability may vary, so check our current selection online or visit our Mackinaw City store.
Why don’t all Murdick’s Fudge Stores offer the same flavors?
Although many stores share the Murdick name, each business is independently owned and may use different recipes, offer different flavors, set different prices, and operate their own websites. We only own our store on Central Avenue in Mackinaw City. Other family owned stores include: Traverse City (Doug Murdick’s Fudge) and Charlevoix (Celeste Murdick’s Fudge). All other stores are owned by proprietors who have bought their own Murdick’s Fudge store.
Can I order Murdick’s Fudge online?
Yes. You can order fudge, peanut brittle, and selected gift packages through our website. There are many different Murdick online stores. Be sure you are ordering from the one store that you like. To order from our family-owned Mackinaw City store, click here: MurdicksFamousFudge.com

Why Is Murdick’s Famous Fudge So Creamy?
Our creamy texture comes from quality ingredients, careful cooking, and the traditional method of cooling and working each batch on a marble slab.
The experience of having actual Murdick candy makers also plays an important role in knowing exactly when the fudge has reached the proper consistency.
Can I Watch the Fudge Being Made?
Absolutely! One of the best parts of visiting Murdick’s Famous Fudge is watching fresh fudge being poured onto the marble slab, worked by hand, shaped into loaves, sliced, and wrapped. Visitors are welcome to watch the entire process. The candy-making process is part of the experience of visiting Murdick’s Famous Fudge.
How Long Does It Take to Learn to Make Fudge?
People often ask if we can teach them to make fudge in a day or two. The answer is no! While someone can learn the basic steps fairly quickly, mastering the art of fudge making takes years of practice and experience.
Every batch is a little different. Changes in humidity, temperature, the butter, the cream, and even the chocolate can affect how the fudge behaves. An experienced candy maker learns to recognize these subtle differences and knows exactly when to pour, cool, and work the fudge to achieve the smooth, creamy texture we’re known for.
The Murdick family has been perfecting this craft since 1887. Aaron Murdick has been making fudge for decades, and his father, John, has spent most of his life in the candy business. That’s experience you simply can’t replace. And that brings us to another question we hear all the time:
Why is your fudge better than everyone else’s?
